Printer Friendly Version

When you have a illness or injury it can be be classified under two types of care depending on the severity of the condition. You may be considered to need:

Acute Care which is short-term care that follows a surgical procedure or a stay in the hospital.

or you may have a

Chronic Illness which is an illness with one of more of the following characteristics: permanency, residual disability, requiring rehabilitation training, or requiring a long period of supervision, observation, or care.

Acute care is associated with a illness or injury that has a recovery period of less than 3 months. A chronic illness may require a patient to need long-term care services for a longer period of time. This chronic illness may be a recurring condition that may worsen with age or leave the patient needing care for rest of their life.
