How do you remain independent during retirement?

Many of you have taken care of your financial security to be able to retire. However, there are many other issues that you will face in retire- ment that affect your quality of life.

Quality of life can be defined by the way you handle or acclimate to sudden changes in life.    If you plan ahead, you will have an easier time handling circumstances before they become a crisis.

Who pays for long-term care? 

There are many misconceptions about who pays for long-term care. The fact that Medicare and most major medical plans only pay for skilled care leaves most of us wondering who pays for long-term care?

Medicaid is an option available for those who have little or no assets to pay for long-term care services. You should consult with an Elder Care Attorney for Medicaid planning. Medicaid rules can be found in our Medicaid section.

As you live longer, being able to manage the quality of your health and the cost of health care can be your greatest challenge.

Medicare will pay for skilled care that you may receive after a hospital stay or rehabilitation after an injury. However, the length of time for this coverage is limited. Medicare will not pay for custodial care once you are able to manage with minimal assistance. Here is how Medicare pays for long-term care.

Medicare Supplements help pay for deductibles  and co-pays that are your responsibility.

Do you know anyone that is having problems paying for their prescription medication? 

For those having problems paying for medications once they reach the new Medicare "donut hole," or take several name brand drugs, there may be a Prescription Assistance program that will help pay for some or all prescriptions. 

Note: State-sponsored or pharmaceutical company assistance programs generally have higher income qualification guidelines than Medicare. Therefore some who will not qualify under Medicare may well qualify for State or private assistance programs.
